                               Essential Oil Play Dough


What are some relaxing ways to calm your child down or support a fun activity when the weather isn’t cooperating?? Aromatherapy Play Dough. This recipe is super easy to make and a great way to introduce your child to Essential Oils. I always feel that being truthful with our children from day the best way to handle any situation. If you are looking for a natural way to help calm your child and also help with focus and mental clarity, etc….why not help them learn about how they can have a part in their healthcare?? Teach your child how Lavender can help calm them down when they feel anxious, irritable….or how Roman Chamomile or Vetiver can help with anger management.

If the child is able to “sense” when they are having those feelings…then… they are taking control over the situation in a mature and responsible manner. My children ages 15,9, and 7, are able to….well for the most part…. sense when they need to use an oil for calming down. By teaching your child this skill, it will equip feelings of FORTITUDE…..and if not…well, there’s an oil for that too ; )

So how can Play Dough do that.. you may be thinking?? Here are just a few benefits…

Fine Motor Skills
Hand muscles can be strengthened, along with coordination and dexterity. You can also hide a bean or penny in the Play Dough (just please be careful placing items in the play Dough..if you know your child is going to place the penny or bean in his/her mouth…DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED)…Place these items in the Play-Doh and have the child find them and use their pincher fingers.. or set a goal to be able to use pincher fingers to retrieve the hidden item. .AND MAKE IT FUN!!!

Social Skills
Some children with certain behavioral disorders do not have the necessary skills for socializing. I really don’t like to use that term..” lack the necessary skills…” I do not believe they “lack” the skills. .I think they are just hidden beneath the surface. Incorporating Play Dough can help. Try with the family all at the table playing with the Play Dough together. Allow the child to become comfortable with the touching of the Play Dough (as sensory can also play a part)…Maybe invite a good family friend over and bring out the Play Dough…or bring it to the next family event. Have all the cousins, aunts, uncles, grandma/grandpa…whoever else there may be…sit down and PLAY!! First thing.. you are NEVER to old to play with Play Dough..and what great family laughs and developing social skills are attained.

Sometimes language or when its hidden …can create a barrier. You can still teach colors and to make requests. Ask what color is this?? Or point to the BLUE color.. the BLUE lid…the BLUE circle..etc. If you are using the molds to make animals or food items, what another wonderful way to incorporate learning..” Can you point to the YELLOW DUCK?? So many ways to incorporate learning and communication. Which the Communication skills also coincide with the Social skills as well.

Anger Management
Play Dough is an EXCELLENT stress/anger reliever. Smush it, Hit it, Pound it, Smack it…do all of the above while crying.. while expressing frustration…what ever it takes to GET  IT OUT!! I use this technique with my middle child.
When DannieMarie is frustrated and she can not sense it.. or she is not sure why… We use Play Dough. The oils in the Play Dough (hence the importance of adding them ) are activated with every pound, knead, roll, tear apart action she can muster up.. Eventually, the aromas do their magic, and she is noticeably calmer and more precise with her Play Dough.. She is willing to even open up and discuss the problem. .I am able to help her.. guide her as to why she is upset,frustrated,mad…and develop ways to try not allow our self to get there again. That’s what are job as parents is to do.. guide them…Did you happen to see any similarities?? No?? The Play Dough calmed her down…it allowed her to process her feelings. Communicate those feelings…and give her a sense of FORTITUDE…And YES…I have even tried it myself when I was mad…It’s pretty amazing.

Are you ready to give this a try?? Here is the super easy recipe….


1. Place a few drops of Organic Vegan Food Coloring into separate dishes and then add 2 cups water to each dish. NOTE: you can find the all natural food coloring at Trader Joe’s, Fresh Thyme, WholeFoods, or online.

2. Combine all the ingredients (except the Essential Oils) into a large saucepan. Stir until mixed thoroughly. NOTE: 1 colored water dish per recipe. This allows for several different colors.

3. Place over medium heat. Use a wooden spoon to continuously sit the ingredients together until a ball forms. NOTE: Be careful to not over cook as this will lead to very dry Play Dough.

4. Remove from heat and place on parchment paper to cool. Typically 20 minutes.

       5. Add 5 drops of Essential oil and knead dough until combined.
Recommended Oils to use: Lavender or Vetiver, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, Balance, Wild Orange, and Peppermint..are my favs.

That’s it!!! Super Easy. Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator.
Do not force the child…give him/her the ability to make the decision to participate. Even if it is brief.

National Therapeutic Week

National Therapeutic Recreation week was designed to raise awareness of the therapeutic programs and services, to improve the wellbeing of individuals with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. Essential Oils can do just that! Essential Oils and Therapeutic touch is something I highly recommend parents looking into.
So what is an Essential oil? How can Essential Oils benefit someone struggling with a learning and or behavioral disorder like ADD/ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s etc.

Essential oils are a natural extract of the protecting fluids of natural vegetation. Nature is so beautiful..mysterious.. and everything was created with Purpose. EVERYTHING.. including YOU!!  With that being said, depending on the plant or its parts (the stem, roots, flowers, rind, leaves etc.) are distilled using a steam process. These oils are highly concentrated. Many of the oils have very strong antibacterial as well as antiviral and antifungal properties. The oils enter our body via Aromatic , Topical use and  Internal use. Studies have shown that the oils penetrate the cell membrane. Therefore altering DNA….just as studies have shown in those participating in mediation. Our brain is our “control center”…if we want to assist in controlling our moods/ emotions…go to the source.. The Limbic system. Which… if you guessed correctly, controls moods and emotions. It’s important to state that “not all oils and or oil companies are the same“. You want to avoid chemicals, synthetic fillers, GMO’s etc. when deciding on an oil/oil company. I would love to help you understand more about the company I put my trust in.

Now that you have a shortened version of what an essential oils is and the basics on how they work. Lets discuss ways in how we can use them to assist in alleviating certain feelings associated with some common disabilities. Remember each person and each child is unique (hence the beauty in the world)…but yes, due to our specific uniqueness, not everyone will re act or respond to an oil the same way. If your reading this, you are looking for a natural way to help your child, or maybe a family member, or maybe a close friend, or maybe even yourself. So lets look at Aromatic (inhalation) and Topical (speaks for itself).

Focus and mental clarity is one of the concerns/wishes that I am asked most about . Next would be feelings of anger, irritability, anxiety, and self-esteem. There are many oil blends that help enhance focus and assist in a productive thought process. Remember many with disorders are highly sensitive to odors and or touch. Never force the application of oils if a negative response is shown. Try allowing the child to participate in the selection of oils. Here are some ideas to help……

You can also try Rosemary, Frankincense, Peppermint, and Wild Orange to increase focus, concentration, or mental clarity. There are also oil blends in which contain several of the oils in one bottle that are meant for Focus and Balancing/Grounding. Oil blends are when two or more oils are “blended’ together creating enhancing effects. There are also numerous oils that help with feelings of anxiety, anger, irritability, and have calming effects. I love the oil blend Peace. This blend promotes feelings of guessed it..PEACE..along with reassurance and contentment.

Diffuse the oils in the morning and or throughout the day, and at night.
Topical application is also a must. This can be done by either placing a few drops of the particular oil in the palm of your hand or create a roller ball and apply behind the ears, wrists, bottoms of the feet and along the spine. I also recommend on the back of the neck, over the heart/chest. Topical application allows for oils to quickly enter the bloodstream and circulate through the body. The largest organ we have is??? Our skin!!! This is why it is so important to monitor the products you put on your skin. Avoid products that contain chemical agents !! Topical application is also in itself soothing.. If you have ever had a massage….. then you can understand how relaxing and soothing and good it makes you feel…Right? That’s because it is Therapeutic.

Our planet…that is mainly a water made up of 5 oceans and 113 seas. Together they represent 72% of the surface of Mama Earth….and…continue to be an endless source of inspiration for the human race. I am and will always be in love with the sea. The ocean was my first love. Nothing beats the salty air…the smell fills my heart with joy …the sound of waves breaking on the the best sound(next to my children’s voice) that I have ever heard…the intoxicating rhythm of the ocean moving in and out… like breath……

I can not stress enough the importance of Ocean conservation…..understanding the effects of global warming and how those effects have catastrophic consequences on marine life…which in turn…effect human life. Remember my previous posts? Remember how 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by marine plants. ( Currently, there are 9 islands that are ENDANGERED!!! Due to global warming and a rise in the ocean. Human lives and cultures are endangered of being lost forever! That breaks my heart. I can’t imagine .

I find myself sitting here, wondering, how WE as the human race, can allow this? How can WE as a species held to be intelligent..Creators of technology…in the year 2017…be in the current state, where WE have placed OUR Planet..with little to no dependent on fossil fuels and industrialization, that WE have created a downward spiral of effects..OUR ancestors knew and understood the sacred connections of life..of each and every living thing. How we are ALL connected. How did WE as a society allow ourselves to flee from such thinking? As I have stated in my previous blogs, there are so many ways you can become involved and help in making a difference. Here are a few more…..

Get involved

Find organizations and participate in organizations that promote and support ocean conservation. Donate your time and or money to help those very organizations. In my previous blogs, I listed a few, but there are so many more that you can find by spending just a few minutes ..searching.. and re searching. Raise Awareness!!! Become involved in your own beach clean up..or organize one in your community. Make flyers up to advertise.. Ask local owners/business to participate.. Each One Teach One.

Stop using products that are devastating to marine life

Microbeads… found in many cosmetic and hygiene products contain these tiny plastic pellets. They make their way from our drains to our waterways….Where they become a toxin. Instead of breaking down…they destroy habitat and are consumed by marine wild…which in turn people will consume toxic fish. A single tube of facial cleaner (the kind that exfoliates), contains anywhere from up to 300,000 microbeads(www. In turn, many cosmetics, hygiene products and cleaning products are destroying our oceans and waterways, as well as marine wildlife…by either their products/chemicals…or using marine life itself as the ingredients.

Raise Awareness

Start with your friends and family…branch out to the community…use social media as a tool. Reach out to your local mayors, governors, State Representatives, and or  Government agencies…including members of the White house whom stated that global warming is a “hoax”….as well as eliminating EPA restrictions as well as the agency itself ( ( (

Ocean Inspiration – Clean Beaches Week

Part 2

In keeping up with Clean Beaches week and raising awareness for our oceans, here are some scary facts. In the last 55 yrs humans have found a way to destroy 90% of the oceans top predators( Overfishing has been documented since the 1800s. Humans slaughtered whales by the dozens simply for blubber for lamp oil, as well as other household products and cosmetics. The 1900s didn’t prove the better either. California sardines had been pushed to the brink of extinction, amongst other marine wildlife…reaching catastrophic levels in the 20th century. (National Geographic).

Humans kill marine wildlife by fishing nets, debris, overfishing, for use in foods and cosmetics….Shark fining (for use in shark fin soup) kills 100 -200 million sharks annually. Just for their fins…In addition, global warming, which despite the idiocy of those in Power …global warming is in fact ACTUAL and not some made up scenario. Our oceans are heating up at an alarming rate causing acidification. 30% of the CO2 that we humans produce is absorbed in the ocean. In turn…70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by marine plants. 97% of the Earth’s water supply is contained in the ocean (
I love the ocean more than I know how to express…maybe its because I grew up in a surfing community and the beach was my playground. Most people love going to the beach on vacation…if WE do not do our part to eliminate our carbon footprint on this Earth, WE will lose the battle..The Earth doesn’t NEED us..WE NEED the EARTH.

Here are 10 things you can do to Save the Ocean

1. Mind your carbon footprint and reduce energy consumption
2. Make safe, Sustainable food choices
3. Use fewer Plastic Products
4. Participate in beach clean ups
5. Avoid purchasing items that exploit marine wildlife
6. Be an Ocean-Friendly pet owner
7. Support organizations working to protect the ocean
8. Influence change in your community and or home
9. Travel the ocean responsibly
10. Educate yourself and others about Oceans and Marine Life

For those long hot summer days when you or the kids can’t seem to get cooled off….here’s a tip or two …

Take a wash rag and soak it in cool water..add a few drops of  Peppermint oil. Give a minute or two for the rag to soak up the oil. Wring out the rag. Apply to the back of the neck. .or…stick the rag in the freezer for a few minutes, and then apply to the back of the neck. Of course….make sure you keep yourself and children well hydrated with H2O.

You can keep it in your cooler or in the refrigerator..when you or the kids need that quick cool off feeling. Simply reach for  the Cool Off Spray. Ocean Inspiration

Greetings mi fren (in my best Patois)..Glad to see you come back to the EarthChild Blog! It’s Summertime and the Livin’ is Easy! My favorite holiday of the year.  Currently, It’s Clean Beaches Week . This weeks blog is about raising awareness for our oceans. In addition, I have some AMAZING recipes for a BEACHIN SUMMER. Oh I’m excited…Are you? So much to go over…so little time. Well, no better time then the present…without further ah do…

Typically, Clean Beaches week is July 1st – July 7th…although I think it should be once a month! I plan on celebrating it for a little bit longer than just 1 week. With that being said, I wanted to share a few organizations that I love. Clean Beaches Coalition or the CBC, is a network in which coastal organizations, as well as individuals, work together for the betterment of our coastal beaches around the world. Check them out at Another organization that is dedicated to the protection of our beaches and oceans is the Surf Rider Foundation( ). Check to see if there are any beach clean ups happening in your area or at a beach near you. Why not take a day trip (if need be) and give back to Mama Earth?!?

You may also catch some local art fairs/festivals, highlighting Clean Beach week.  Can’t be by the beach? I completely feel your pain and emphasize with you wholeheartedly. This one hits home for me. I grew up in Cape May, NJ.  Not a day goes by that I don’t miss the smell of the salty air..the sound of sea gulls in the distance… the way the salt felt on my skin… and in my curls…sun kissed cheeks after surfing all day… Listening to the sound of the ocean..synchronizing with my own breath..or was I synchronizing with Mama Earth?

The beaches and marine life that abound in coastal areas, need just as much attention as any other environment. In 2016, the International Coastal Cleanup ( reported that 18, 399,900 pounds of trash was removed from our oceans…that’s 13, 840, 398 trash items . Disgusting to think there’s so much more that wasn’t removed. I’m hoping 2017 brings in less trash found. So much life is found in and around coastal areas, and that includes humans!! We must start caring more for our environment. There are still ways in which you can participate in Clean Beach Week. Not living by the beach doesn’t mean you can’t  promote and raise awareness.

You can go online and research several organizations, find Universities that have a Marine Biology program and or local aquariums. Try DONATIONS!!! Every donation goes into helping support education on coastal/marine wildlife, and many more programs. Let’s not forget the time and effort of others, and let’s face it..everything run a well-organized business. Reach out and help..Every little bit helps..YOU CAN BE THE CHANGE YOU SEEK IN THE WORLD.

As far as the local art galleries that you will find alongside the beach, in cute little pop up tents or along the boardwalk. Don’t fret your little heart out, you can support and or look at most of the galleries online. Just a little digging around through your search engine or may I suggest check out :

For those of us that are not close to the beach (as much as we wish we were)…we can still find another way to bring the beach to our homes. Diffusing Essential Oils can do just that!

These diffuser blends create a Beachy Summer feel in the home and or office. As always, when we “smell” the oils it hits the part of the brain (limbic) that controls moods and emotions. So… Diffuse on my friends! One other item I suggest to keep on hand for after the beach clean ups, pool time, lake time or any activities in that Glorious an After Sun Spray. Instead of going to the store and purchasing a “chemical” to spray on your sunburn, or using a product that contains harsh compounds, dyes, etc. Why not use Essential Oils? It’s super simple to make and your friends and family will love you for sharing it with them. Here’s the recipe I use that everyone swears by….

Combine all the ingredients in a glass spray bottle. FYI…you can find Pure Organic Aloe Vera juice and Vitamin E oil at most health food stores. You will also want to store the glass bottle in the refrigerator to keep it cool..after all… your skin is burn right? How I Quit Smoking Using Essential Oils Part 2

Whether you are returning after reading my first blog or just simply happened to stumble across this one, I hope you find this blog helpful for yourself or possibly for a loved one. So when we last left off, I had been looking for a way to quit smoking that fit my natural healthy way of living, and I found it through the use of Essential Oils. So how did I do it? How did it work?
What you will need is an oil blend I call Chill Pill. The oils in the blend focus on irritability, anxiety, emotional support, anger.. yet are also calming. The oils were placed in a roller ball and cut with a carrier oil such as coconut oil , so that inhalation and topical use can be used. See recipe below.


Then it was time!  When I got to the last cigarette, I said “this is it.. last one!”. When the craving for a cigarette began…I think it took 4 or 5 hrs. later…I reached for the Chill Pill Blend. I would rub the oil on my writs, over my heart and in my palms and breathe deeply several times. I read somewhere to breathe in the oils for the length of time it would take one to smoke a cigerrete(about a minute to 2 mins depending on the individual).. Believe it or not…It worked.. It got me thru the craving. Of course, I felt silly walking around, driving in the car, sitting at my office desk, the couch…sniffing and inhaling this roller ball. LOL.. There were times were I was inhaling every 30 minutes in the beginning… but I wasn’t to concerned about what people thought. In fact, it presented a great opportunity to explain the situation.

When the oils are inhaled they immediately travel to the limbic system of the brain where they have a profound affect on moods, emotions, alertness and other functions controlled by this central part of the brain (Essentials of the Earth,6th Edition). It amazes me that use of oils dates back to as early as ancient Egypt.

The second thing you will need to incorporate is using a diffuser. I used several blends that again promoted the calming of irritability, agitation, anxiousness, etc. I diffused the oils constantly..24-7. “Diffusion uses ultra sonic and nebulizing atomization methods”(Essential of the Earth,6th Edition). basically, it puts the “smells” into the room, without using chemicals or heating up oils, etc. I researched different blends that helped with calming such as cinnamon, clove, and black pepper. Having my Chill Pill roller ball in my pocket(nice and handy) along with diffusing the blends constantly really helped in the process of quitting. I’m not going to sit here and act like it was easy peasy..cause it was not! Truthfully, you have to want it. You really have to tell yourself breathing in these 4,000 chemicals…43 known to be cancer-causing( is INSANE!!!! Not to mention the money you spend.

Of course, there’s the horrible smell that comes along with it(which I never knew existed). It’s true. I’m not trying to sound all self-righteous now, but when I am approached by a smoker…(I smell you). When I had been smoke free for about a week, I had an epiphany. Is that what I smelled like? OMG !!! When I would snuggle and get close up in my kids faces….did I smell like that?? Mama should not smell like that!!! That exact moment only pushed me further to not give up (because there were times when I found it hard to continue. But I did).

If YOU THINK it…then YOU SPEAK it….If YOU SPEAK it…YOU BELIEVE it !!! There is Power in our thoughts and words. What we think, we believe, then we become. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! I BELIEVE in YOU!!

There you have it….The Secret!. With the support from friends and family, as well as my own self determination, I quit smoking naturally using Essential Oils. The first 36 hrs. was tough. Then it got easier and easier. Before I knew it I was not “sniffing” the Chill Pill blend anymore. It took 1 week for no cravings..1 week more to notice how horrible smoke smelled and how much more things smelled better and tasted.

My journey towards a conscious healthy way of living was now a reality. Every step along the way, paved the way for every other step to follow…and so on and so on. How I Quit Smoking Using Essential Oils

A few years ago, I decided to embark on a more conscious healthy way of living. It started with turning the household food to ORGANIC ONLY. It took a lot of time and effort learning how to buy organic and on a budget as a single mother of 3. Yet I was able to figure it out and it became easier and easier to shop. I also was able to narrow my grocery shopping to 1 store! I felt confident about my 3 girls not eating and drinking products that were packed full of GMO’s (Genetically Modified Ingredients), food with added hormones and antibiotics.
The more I became an advocate for Organic products, the more I found myself reading articles and researching other “healthy living” modes. I started working on learning and developing my own YOGA routines. Sounds like a healthy lifestyle right?? However, I was still smoking about a pack to a pack and a half a day! Along with all the excuses of why…” I have a lot of stress as a single parent” (yet I did YOGA every morning). Or the excuse of ” I have been smoking for 20 yrs. It’s too late to stop”. Anything sound familiar to you? Empty excuses I would continue to give myself , my children, my family and friends.
Two years ago, I stumbled upon a video re-posted by a extremely conscious woman, and a mentor by the name of Ju’Light  ( It was a video called Cow Conspiracy…now hold on!! Stay with me. By no means do I judge nor push my beliefs/views on anyone.. EVER! As I was saying, after watching the video, I decided to become a Vegan. I let my family and at the time fiancé, in on my decision. I discussed it with my dear Sistah, and still to this day listen to the negative narrow-minded opinions of others, with an open mind because we are all entitled to our own opinions right? Each One Teach One.
So there I was, back at square one, where I was a few years ago, learning how to grocery shop again, but this time it was more difficult. I wasn’t looking for just a sticker or a PLU starting with a certain number. I now had to learn to cut out processed food, not buy products that contained any type of animal ingredients and or by-products. I was also back to shopping at more than 1 grocery store, and trying to figure out why eating healthy costs so much money? With everyday of staying within the Vegan philosophy, I found myself becoming more conscious.. more connected. Except for one thing….I was still smoking!! Still giving the same excuses, but now I had added a new one..” I’m gonna quit but I wanna do it naturally”..and ” I’m gonna just cut down instead of going cold turkey”.
I really did feel conflicted about still smoking. How can I be an example for my children and others to live a healthy conscious lifestyle, and here I am still smoking? However, I kept plugging along on my journey to a more conscious way of living. I wasn’t going to give up on myself. I am a strong woman! A women who is a survivor of domestic violence, a woman who birthed 3 beautiful children, and then became a single parent struggling every step of the way (insert Super Man theme music)….A women who has been at her lowest but looks back at it all with gratitude and appreciation…for I would not be who I am or learned everything I have learned if it were not for each and every event/person in my life.
So thank you to everyone who has touched my life in one way or another. I can only hope I have touched yours [queue emotional music]. How did I quit smoking, is your question(if your still reading this). I was introduced to Essential Oils. Now before you click the back button to escape…hear me out…what can it hurt? So I had been on a journey to a more healthy conscious lifestyle, when I was introduced to a company from a friend.
I had heard and seen posts about the company and essential oils before, but never had the opportunity to sit down with someone I trust to explain the in’s and out’s. I had so much fun that night and so did my daughter, making rollerballs filled with different oils to promote and or aid in numerous aliments. I was hooked! The company stood for things that matter to me, the use of oils fit the homeopathic, all natural, conscious way of life, I wanted for myself and family. I became a member and it has been the best move I ever made. I started making my own all natural products for household cleaning, filling my medicine cabinet with oils and concoctions…and then I decided no more excuses!
Here was my opportunity to quit smoking. So I ordered some oils that are known to help with the anxiety, addiction, irritability etc. that is associated with nicotine withdraw. I researched how to use them, how often, and spoke with other wellness advocates who had or knew of success stories. So are you still struggling with how to kick this habit?
